Tero's news after the olympiad
The Olympic year 2008 ended with Tero's third consecutive medal from a major competition. This time, the medal was bronze, which felt good after the variable season. Thus, Tero still has something to improve on four years from now. In the Golden League, Tero achieved three first, two second and one third place. The season was not everything that I had expected but taking into account the entire season, I think I did well in the most important competitions. Everything was fine until Portugal where I had a three-week training session at the turn of April and May. After the training session, I started to experience minor injuries which messed up my technique and training to the extent that I wasn't able to achieve quite the same throwing mood as in the past few years.
After the competitive season, I took four weeks off sports. I went to northern Finland to hike from Pallastunturi to Hetta, spending the nights under the starry skies. I had other things to do during the holiday as well, and now I feel refreshed.
Now I've been training hard in order to retain my good motivation. The training has gone well, without problems so far. We focused on my basic physical condition in the autumn, and I star-ted to throw again in mid-December. In the beginning of January I'm heading back to my fami-liar training grounds in South Africa for three weeks. The main objective of the training session is finishing the changes made to my technique and correcting the faults in my technique that were evident last summer.
Staying healthy is of utmost importance this training season. If this happens, I can reach the 90-metre level again. We have added some new stimuli to my training sessions that will hope-fully improve my results.
The main objective next season is naturally defending the mastership in the Berlin World Championships. Another objective is achieving a new personal record. The current one is 91.53 metres. Other important events are the Golden League and the tough Finnish javelin competitions.
Wishing a great year 2009 to all members of the Ponsse team,
Tero Pitkämäki
